Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT ARE DERMAL FILLERS?

Dermal fillers are biocompatible, injectable substances that create lift, add volume, and restore a more youthful appearance to certain areas of the face to reverse signs of aging.

WHAT IS IN THE FILLER?

The most common fillers are made of a soft gel consisting of non-animal hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that naturally occurs in the human body, and it is found in our skin. It helps hydrate and adds volume to the skin. It is naturally broken down by our own bodies. Dermal fillers consisting of hyaluronic acid include brands such as Juvéderm and Restylane.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF FILLER?

Broken down by our bodies as we age, we lose volume in key areas of the face. This contributes to folds, wrinkles, hollow temples, thinning lips, sunken eyes, and an older appearance to the face. Fillers can be used to restore this volume loss, smooth out folds and wrinkles, and improve contours to achieve natural, youthful results without altering facial expression.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS & RISKS?

In general, dermal fillers are considered very safe. The most common reactions are redness, swelling, bruising, itching, and tenderness. These are typically mild and resolve spontaneously in 1-7 days for most patients. Other side effects are very rare. Consult with your provider before receiving any treatments.

HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?

The effects are long lasting but not permanent. They last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years, depending on a number of factors including the patient’s age, area treated, type of filler used, quantity of filler used, and lifestyle.

Your Visit

BEFORE YOUR VISIT

One Week Prior

  • Avoid taking medications or supplements that thin the blood—Aspirin, Fish Oil, Vitamin E, and any NSAID’s (Non Steroidal Anti inflammatory agents such as Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Naproxen). Please consult with your primary care physician/practitioner prior to discontinuing any medications.

2 Days Prior

  • (Optional) You may start pre-treating with Arnica. It may help to lessen bruising and/or swelling.

24 Hours Prior

  • Do not drink alcohol.

  • Avoid caffeine.

DAY OF YOUR VISIT

  • Please arrive at the office with a "clean face"—makeup-free and washed

  • A topical anesthetic or "numbing cream" may be applied to the treatment area to maximize your comfort. Please arrive on time as this process may take anywhere from 15-30 minutes.

  • Hydrate.

AFTER YOUR VISIT

  • May apply ice/cold compress to the area for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, 2-3 times a day or more after treatment to reduce swelling (especially helpful for lips).

  • To avoid movement of the filler, do not push the ice/compress too hard against the treatment area.

  • Don’t touch or massage the area treated for at least 6 hours. After that, ensure hands are clean if the area needs to be touched for any reason.

  • Avoid vigorous exercise, alcohol and NSAIDs 24 hours after to decrease risk of bruising

  • Stay hydrated! Drink lots of water and avoid salty foods to minimize swelling.

  • Tylenol as needed for discomfort/tenderness

  • May use topical or oral arnica for bruising (over the counter supplement)

  • Avoid makeup to the treated area for the first 12-24 hours, then apply make-up lightly.

  • Avoid facial treatments, facial waxing, Glycolic or AHA peels, or laser treatments for 14 days after your injection.

  • Common side effects include temporary redness, swelling, small lumps/bumps, and tenderness to the treated areas. These symptoms are all normal and typically resolve within 2-3 days.

  • Until the temporary redness and swelling have resolved, avoid exposure of the treated area to heat (tanning, outdoor activities, working out).

  • Most lumps or bumps will resolve on their own in 5-7 days following treatment. If you notice any lumps after the swelling has subsided, gently massage the area with clean fingertips and notify the office to schedule a follow up appointment.

  • Additional treatments may be required to reach aesthetic goals- this may require more product and have additional costs.

Warning: If excessive swelling or signs of infection occur, please contact the office immediately. (Moderate swelling immediately post treatment is normal). Signs of infection include:

  • Drainage that looks like pus

  • Increased warmth and/or redness around the treatment area

  • Significant tenderness or pain around the treatment area

  • Fever - Temperature of 100.5F or greater
